Essential oils are pure, aromatic components of plants which are extracted by steam distillation, enfleurage, solvent extraction or expression. In their pure, concentrated form, they are extremely powerful and should be handled by a knowledgeable practitioner.
Essential oils are composed of mostly aromatic organic chemicals such as alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, phenols, acids, etc. They are not “oily” in the ways we refer to vegetal oils, but they do not mix with water. They are soluble in alcohol as well as oils. Essential oils should not be applied undiluted. They are active in even very small concentrations.
The rate of their absorption through the skin is very fast and they reach the lymphatic system and the blood stream. They are generally known as detoxifying and balancing agents. They all have more or less antiseptic or anti-bacterial properties and they are very powerful stimulants of regeneration and healing.
There are many attempts at imitations, many of which are commonly used. We use only pure, undiluted essential oils.

Carrier oils, or vegetal oils. Expressed mostly from seeds, these oils are extremely rich in components the new plant will need for growth and development. They contain liposoluble vitamins, fatty acids, fatty alcohols, phospholipids, mono-, di- and tri-glyceride esters of fatty acids, etc. All of which are biologically active chemicals. Some of these chemicals are building blocks for cell membranes and other structures in the skin as well as through the body.
Vegetal oils and waxes are extremely well accepted and tolerated by the skin. They are, by their nature, nourishing, softening, emollient on the skin, they lubricate and protect and are absorbed and utilized by the skin.

In aromatherapy vegetal oils are used as carriers for essential oils and other oil-soluble ingredients, namely vitamins. They are also necessary for creating an emulsion or a cream. We use cold-pressed, pure vegetal oils, unbleached beeswax and butters.
